The risk of breast carcinoma–related death for women with ductal carcinoma in situ is low, regardless of histologic characteristics or method of treatment. Radiotherapy reduces the risk of disease recurrence in the breast, and awareness of the magnitude of benefit is useful in counseling patients regarding treatment. See also pages 429–38.
