The report by Thomas et al. in the first volume of Cancer 50 years ago concerned 132 patients with multiple primary lesions of the colon who underwent surgical treatment between 1907 and 1944. Since that time, there has been a tremendous increase in knowledge regarding colon carcinoma and two significant points discussed in the original article‐family history and "right‐sidedness" of multiple primary lesions‐now are recognized to be prominent features of this entity.
