Accurate and complete cancer incidence data on Alaska Natives are available since 1969 as a result of collaborative efforts of the Indian Health Service and the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Cancer incidence rates from the initial 5 years of the Alaska Native Tumor Registry are compared with the most recent 5‐year period available. Cases are identified and information is collected on each patient in accordance with the procedures of the NCI Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results Program. Over the 25‐year period (1969‐1993), the numbers of newly diagnosed Alaska Native cancer patients each year have more than doubled. Age‐adjusted incidence rates have increased 28% in men and 25% in women. Cancer patterns in Alaska Natives continue to differ from those of U.S. whites and from American Indians living in the contiguous 48 States. Increases in Alaska native rates over time are due largely to increases in tobacco‐related cancers. Cancer 1998;83:1815‐1817. © 1998 American Cancer Society.
