Hepataocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the top five common cancers among Asian Americans. The majority of the HCCs in this population are associated causally with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. With the newly available antiviral agents, by eliminating the virus at an early stage of HBV infection, one could attempt to delay or prevent the development of HCC. The primary prevention of HCC would be a hepatitis B vaccine. Cancer 1998;83:1723‐1729. © 1998 American Cancer Society.
