The genetic basis for hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal carcinoma (HNPCC) and its characteristic pathologic features are summarized. Although there is no definitive explanation for the observation that patients with HNPCC appear to have better prognoses than those with sporadic carcinoma, potential explanations are discussed.
