"Tumors of the Thymus in Relation to the Thymic Epithelial Anlage," an article by Elizabeth Lowenhaupt published in Cancer in 1948, proposed a new classification of primary thymic neoplasms based on the embryologic development of the normal thymus and introduced the concept of "granulomatous thymoma," later expanded by the same author in this journal. The proposed classification failed to gain acceptance, and "granulomatous thymoma" proved to be Hodgkin's disease of the thymus.
