Fifty years ago, Dr. David Karnofsky reported the benefits of nitrogen mustard in the treatment of lung carcinoma. He helped establish the criteria for rigid assessment of tumor response to chemotherapy. Since then, progress in developing chemotherapy for advanced and metastatic lung carcinoma has been slow and, by some criteria, minimal. However, some optimism is warranted regarding the potential for future therapeutic developments.
