Clinically detected prostate carcinoma takes a heavy toll on the lives of men in the Western world. As the population ages and other causes of disability and death are brought under control, the burden of prostate carcinoma will continue to increase. Early detection and management of localized disease remain controversial, yet the sobering fact is that more than one million men age older than 50 years who are alive today in the U.S. are destined to die of prostate carcinoma if better methods of prevention or treatment are not urgently found.
