The polymerization of bisphenol‐A diphthalic anhydride with 2,3‐bis(perfluoroalkyl methyl)butane‐1,4 diamine (NFD) led to a new series of fluorinated poly(ether imide)s. In the case of C 4 F 9 perfluoroalkyl chain, polymers and copolymers obtained from a mixture of m ‐phenylenediamine and NFD were characterized by FTIR, NMR, molecular weights, glass transition temperature, thermal degradation temperature and surface energies; their hydrophobic properties and processability may provide an easy preparation of non‐porous films. © 1999 Society of Chemical Industry
