Abstract Soluble polybenzyls were prepared by a catalytic electrophilicFriedel–Crafts type polycondensation betweenα,α′‐dichloro‐ p ‐xyleneand substituted (by an alkyl or an alkoxyside‐chain) mesitylene. The influence of the length ofthe side‐chain on the solubility of the polymer was examined. The polymers were found to be soluble in common organic solvents.Polymer characterizations were made by 13 C nuclearmagnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), size exclusionchromatography (SEC), differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) andelemental analysis. © 1999 Society of Chemical Industry
