The main goal of the study is to establish a relation‐ ship between monthly precipitation and discharge fields over the karstic Cetina river basin situated on the eastern Adriatic coast (Croatia). For that purpose a principal component analysis (PCA) of Cetina's time series (1961–1985) of monthly precipitation and discharge data was used. In addition, European sea‐level pressure data were examined. The results indicate the existence of a high correlation between precipitation and discharge fields in the area considered, except for the hydrological stations closely below Peruća lake where human influence is significant. Also, these fields are connected with the European sea‐level pressure field. Thus, a forecast of this field can be used for estimation of the other two. Also, this relationship can be used for reduction of global climate model (GCM) scenarios to the regional scale. © 1997 by the Royal Meteorological Society. Int. J.
