The frequency varactor tuning characteristics of voltage‐controlled oscillators (VCO) on elements with distributed parameters are analysed and presented in a generalized form. The recommendations on the choice of transmission line type, circuit and varactor parameters for the purposes of widening and linearization of the voltage frequency tuning characteristics are given. Large amounts of numerical and experimental results are performed to illustrate the theoretical assumptions. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
