A new concept the ‘virtual circuit’ is raised in this article. Its application in large‐scale network analysis with tearing is presented. This new approach unifies three different tearing methods, i.e., the branch tearing, the node tearing and the hybrid tearing. Based on the virtual circuit, the tearing equation with a standard Bordered Block Diagonal form can be established directly. The approach presented in this article is applicable to any large‐scale network analysis. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
