We introduce a collection of techniques, which we propose to denote ‘neuromorphic CNN’, for applying cellular neural networks to the physiologically‐detailed modelling of biological neural systems. Examples will be given of the application of these methods to the construction of highly biologically‐faithful models of the vertebrate retina, and the utility of such models to neurobiological research will be discussed.
