Abstract The concentration of hydrogen in stainless‐steel cylinders that had been exposed to hydrogen gas many times was calculated, based on the diffusion equation and the numerical method of finite difference. The concentration of hydrogen in 316L and 22‐13‐5 stainless‐steel cylinders that had been exposed to hydrogen gas at temperatures of 400 °C and 740 °C and stored in air at room temperature were determined by SIMS to test the calculation. The calculation was in good agreement with determination. Some discussions on the bulk diffusion of hydrogen are made in this report. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
