The nitridation process of MJ12 (Ti–47Al–2Nb–2Cr) and MJ47 (Ti–47Al–2Nb–Mn + 0.TiB 2 ) in an atmosphere of purified ammonia has been investigated over the temperature range 1000–1200 K. The nitrided alloys showed improvement of hardness and wear resistance in this environment. At 1200 K nitridation, Knoop hardness values of MJ12 and MJ47 were 1283.6 and 1391.3 kg mm −2 , respectively, and the decrease in wear rate of both alloys was as much as 99%. By using x‐ray diffraction, TiN was detected on the surface of the alloys nitrided ≥1100 K. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
