The potential and limitations of scanning tunnelling microscopy forthe study of platinum particles deposited on various carbon samplesare discussed. Limitations are mainly connected with displacement ofmetal particles by the STM tip, difficulty in distinction betweendifferent chemical species and achieving atomic resolution ofdeposited metal particles. Possible solutions for mitigating theselimitations are addressed. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley &Sons, Ltd.
