We describe an all‐optical approach for highly sensitive mass spectrometry employing ultrashort laser pulses for surface excitation and post‐ionization of sputtered neutrals. From the spatial and temporal distribution of particles desorbed, the amount of desorbed particles is deduced and the surface temperature during the desorption process is derived. The system presented exhibits an overall sensitivity of better than 10 10 atoms cm ‐2 .
