The collision‐induced decomposition mass spectrum of protonated m ‐nitrobenzyl alcohol (NBA) was studied. The various cluster ions fragment mainly by loss of neutral NBA. Nitro‐to‐nitrite isomerization followed by loss of • NO is a favoured fragmentation pathway of the [MH] + ion. Eliminations of • OH, H 2 O and HNO 2 are among the other common fragmentation routes. Alkali metal cationization also leads to prominent loss of • NO. Accurate mass measurements and various linked scanning measurements were used to elucidate the fragmentation pathways.
