Abstract This paper presents a semi‐analytic procedure for obtaining solutions of contaminant migration from a deeply buried cylindrical source surrounded by approximately annular zones of material where each of these zones is homogeneous with its own set of properties. The solution technique involves the use of Laplace transform to eliminate the time derivative of the advection‐dispersion equation governing contaminant transport. Solutions are found in the Laplace transform space and inverted numerically using an efficient inversion algorithm due to Talbot to obtain the concentrations in real space and time.
