Abstract Simultaneous sliding and rotation of the rigid block is studied, when it is subjected to a strong horizontal motion of the ground. The main purpose of the work is to develop an analytical approach, to predict qualitatively possible behaviour of the body. Two phases of the block rotation are investigated: (1) with a fixed direction of relative sliding, (2) after the friction force changes its direction. The conditions of the overturning for the first phase are formulated. In the second phase the main attention is paid to the analysis of conditions when the body returns back to the initial position and when the final overturning occurs. All the analytical results are compared with numerical calculations.
