A case of simultaneous infection with HIV and HCV characterized by a rapidly progressive clinical course was studied retrospectively over 3.5 years. Molecular analysis indicated interference between HIV and HCV and between HCV sub‐types 1a and 1b. An ineffective immune response was suggested by the persistence and sequence conservation of the HCV HVR1 variants isolated during the follow‐up. © 1996 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.
