Abstract A 2‐year‐old, male beagle dog was presented for evaluation of ascites and inappetence. Systolic blood pressure was 162 mmHg. Haemato‐biochemical analysis revealed regenerative anaemia, leukopenia, hypoalbuminemia with normal liver and kidney function but elevated lipid profile values. Urine analysis revealed a high urine protein to creatinine ratio. Ultrasonography depicted the presence of anechoic fluid in the abdomen and a portal vein thrombus within the extrahepatic portal system. The serum sample was assessed for the aetiology of protein‐losing nephropathy, and it was found to be positive for Ehrlichia canis . The dog was prescribed diuretics, oral antiplatelet drugs (aspirin and clopidogrel) for thrombo‐embolism, a vasodilator, an antibiotic and an antacid with salt restriction and a high‐quality low protein diet. Initial therapy for the thrombus had no improvement till 10 days, so heparin was administered subcutaneously, which was found successful for complete dissolution of the thrombus. Therefore, the successful management of portal vein thrombosis in a dog with protein‐losing nephropathy is reported.
