The luminescence of trivalent terbium, europium and ytterbium can be reversibly photomodulated by using the photoswitch diazocine. The image illustrates one of the contributing mechanisms, competitive absorption, in which the diazocine dynamically limits the amount of energy available for the luminescence process. Further contributing mechanisms are the depopulation of the excited state of the lanthanoid and reabsorption after emission. More information can be found in the Research Article by N. Winterholler and E. Kreidt (DOI: 10.1002/chem.202500397 ).
