Key Points Question What is the risk of severe maternal morbidity or mortality in women with a preexisting disability compared with women without disabilities? Findings This population-based cohort study evaluated more than 1.8 million births in Ontario, Canada. Compared with women without a disability, the adjusted relative risk of severe maternal morbidity or death was 29% higher among women with a physical disability, 14% higher among women with a sensory disability, 57% higher among women with an intellectual/developmental disability, and 74% higher among women with 2 or more disabilities. Meaning These findings suggest that preconception and perinatal care provisions should be considered among women with a disability to reduce the risk of adverse outcomes.
