In literature, inflation is briefly defined as a speed of increase in the general level of prices. Inflation rates in Turkey are monthly and annualy calculated by Turkish Statistical Institute ( TSI). What is meant by general level of prices is goods and services in the baskets formed with survey method. These goods and services have a weight in the basket in accordance with the data gathered by the survey method. That there is product diversity causes weight rates to go downward. Hence, there are apparent differences between spending weight of a product in one’s budget and weighted rates of the same product as to the basket. Accordingly, for example; the weight of bread in the basket is not the same as the weight of bread in the weight of the purchased products of a normal household. After all, it is mathematically impossible. Yet, to be the same, the household needs to buy 432 of goods and services in the basket every time. In this context, it was first given brief definifions of inflation then it was included price indexes generally used in calculating inflation rates. Also, it was put emphasis on methods used in measuring Turkey inflation rates. To make it understandable whether determining budget weights is reliable or not, January 2014 net salary data of the working officers in Turkey were presented in tables. In this case, in a economy which salary increase is determined according to inflation rates, general welfare of the society could be increased by means of calculating inflation rates of goods and services which are always consumed by the majority of the society. Thus,in the light of these facts, it was aimed to give a message that goods and servise diversity in the inflation basket should be reduced to the more sensible and more realistic level.
