Through the differentiation of a formula defining the water content ratio, a water-in-oil emulsification equation for crude oil is derived to include the effects of evaporation loss and entrained water with time. The equation reveals that emulsification is governed by two fixed parameters (related to the evaporation process) and four free constant parameters. The presentation of water content ratio versus evaporation ratio is found to be useful for understanding the emulsification process. The free constant parameters are selected to fit the numerical solutions to the measured values obtained in flume tests on six types of Middle East crude oils.
