The Tanzimat era novelists write novels to enlight the society. They wish to educate the society with novels about various subjects such as Westernisation, status of women in society, edification of children, marriage, household relations, poridigality etc. These social problems are important for Tanzimat era novelists. The novelists also emphasize education in their novels frequently. The characters in Tanzimat novels are the narrative elements to emphasize education for the novelists. The aim of this study is to evaluate educational backgrounds of the characters and to determine the social issues related to these backgrounds. Thus, while the population of this study comprises of Tanzimat era Turkish novels, sampling comprises of “Taaşşuk-ı Talat ve Fitnat”, “İntibah”, “Felâtun Bey ile Râkım Efendi” and “Araba Sevdası”. These novels has been examined by focusing on educational backgrounds of the characters. The conclusion that had drawned from the findings of the study is that contemporary social realities had related to educational backgrounds of the characters in the novels. In this context, women’s education had discussed in “Taaşşuk-ı Talat ve Fitnat” through female characters. Ali Bey is the main character of “İntibah”. He is a weak minded and inexperienced person. He falls in love with a “ wrong” woman who destroys his life. One of the reasons of Ali Bey’s destruction is his inadequate educational background. The role of education to create an ideal Ottoman intellectual had discussed in “Felâtun Bey ile Râkım Efendi” through characters. A spendthrift, poridigal and quixotic person had narrated “Araba Sevdası”. The educational background of this person also had mentioned in the novel.
