In this paper, the character, capabilities and qualities anddifferences of poetry and prose which are the two essential wording orstyle of expressing of the literature will be considered and discussed byreferring to various poets, authors and academics, since poetry andprose are two different ways of expression each of which has aparticular pattern, sense, function and effect of its own. The fact thatthe poets and authors of the world literature-as well as of Turkishliterature- mostly prefer one of those genres or sometimes use both ofthem in the same work is an indicator that those two literary genreshave a particular characteristic and possibilities of their own.Furthermore, the harms caused by using a statement of prose in poetry,the harms of thinking in a way peculiar to prose and briefly turninginto a prose will be comprehended in this study; because many poetsand authors have pointed out that the greatest danger that the poetrywould face with is “becoming a prose”, “turning into a prose” and thefact that the words and verses lose their poeticalness, in other words,the simple pattern of prose runs through the work is considered to becontrary to the nature, sense, and briefly the soul of the poetry. Apartfrom all mentioned above, I will deal with the issues whether the poemmay be composed or written in prose, or whether the prose-workscontaining poetical sense [intent] and logic may be regarded as poetry.Influenced by the atmosphere of freeness which is thought to haveaccompanied the romantic movement of 19th century, the poets havesuggested that the poetry is not supposed to be in verse and also statedthat not every work in verse can be consider as poetry or not every workin prose can be left out of poetry. However, the different evaluations ofthe 20th century poets about this subject on which even the mostdistant poets far from each other have arrived at a consensus will beconsidered here.   Bu çalışmada, edebiyatın iki temel anlatım şekli olan nazım ve nesrin mahiyetleri, kabiliyetleri, özellikleri ve birbirinden farkları; çeşitli şair, yazar ve akademisyenlerin görüşlerine başvurulmak suretiyle sorgulanacak ve tartışılacaktır. Zira şiir ve nesir, ayrı işleyişi, niyeti, düzeni ve etkisi olan iki farklı ifade biçimidir. Asırlar boyunca, Türk edebiyatında olduğu gibi dünya edebiyatında da şair ve yazarların bu türlerden çok defa birisini tercih etmeleri bazen de ikisini aynı eserde kullanmaları bunların kendilerine ait özellik ve imkânları olduğunu gösterir. Bunun yanında, şiirde nesir cümlesi kullanmanın, nesre ait bir mantık yürütmenin, kısaca nesirleşmenin şiire vereceği zararlar da bu çalışmanın kapması içindedir. Zira çalışmada görüleceği üzere pek çok şair ve yazar, şiir için en büyük tehlike olarak “nesir hâline gelmeyi” ve “nesirleşmeyi” göstermiş; kelime ve mısraların şiirsel değerlerinin kaybolması yani eserde basit nesir düzenin işleyişi, şiirin tabiatına, niyetine, kısaca ruhuna aykırı bulunmuştur. Bütün bunlardan başka, şiirin nesir olarak yazılıp yazılamayacağı, şiirsel niyet ve mantık taşıyan mensur eserlerin şiirden sayılıp sayılamayacağı da hâlline çalışılan problemlerdendir. 19. asır romantizmiyle beraber geldiğini düşündüğümüz serbestleşme havasının da etkisiyle şairler artık şiirin mutlaka nazımda aranmaması gerektiğini, her nazmın şiir sayılamayacağı gibi, her mensur eserin de şiir dışına atılamayacağını belirtmişler ve “mensur şiir” adıyla yeni bir türün varlığına inanmışlardır. Fakat 19. yüzyılda birbirine en uzak şairlerin bile üzerinde ittifak ettikleri bu konu üzerinde 20. yüzyıl şairlerinin farklı değerlendirmeleri karşımıza çıkacaktır
