This paper presents an approach to a source that only recently has become available. It is the Himnario Evangelico (Evangelical Hymnal, HE) edited by the Unión Evangélica (Evangelical Presbyterian Union) in Valparaiso, Chile, in 1891. In these pages we convey some general data about HE, its editors and general characteristics, the differences between tunes that we find in HE and in other sources, tunes arranged and specially composed for HE, tune patterns, and paradigms that its editors probably paid attention to. The paper highlights the names of composers who wrote hymn tunes that were first printed in HE, like Chilean Delfina Hidalgo and American Rev. William B. Boomer, and finally we provide some insights about the continuity of HE in the years after its first edition.
