Signs and symptoms Varicose veins are dark purple or blue in colour and are usually twisted and bulging in appearance. Symptoms include aching, heavy and uncomfortable legs; swollen feet and ankles; burning or throbbing in the legs; muscle cramps, especially at night; and dry, itchy, thin skin over the affected vein. Symptoms are usually worse during warm weather or after standing up for long periods.
