Lontra longicaudis is a mammal of the mustelid family endangered in Rio Grande do Sul State. Information about this animal is important in development of future conservation action. Thus this work combines relevant documents by means of a bibliographic alluding otters with emphasis on state populations. Results elucidate the biology, ethology and dispersion of otters. Data from diet found an opportunist habit and a possible selectivity about cichlid fish. We conclude that species occurs throughout the state and prefer shelters of rock and preserved areas. Valuable data for support of specie. However, some issues still require to be answered.
