Tulisan ini memaparkan tentang industri film independen Indonesia; mulai dari bagaimana awal mulanya hingga saat film independen Indonesia menjadi bagian dari industri film Indonesia kini. Dengan menggunakan historiografi yang proses penulisannya memanfaatkan metode sejarah, tulisan ini mendeskripsikan perkembangan sinema independen Indonesia pada era Pasca Reformasi. Sejak kemunculannya pada tahun 1970an, seperti yang terjadi di belahan dunia lain, pengaruh film independen terhadap industri film nasional juga terlihat di Indonesia pada abad ke-20. Pada era Orde Baru, sinema independen Indonesia digerakkan oleh sineas muda yang berada di luar industri film mainstream. Namun dengan perkembangan teknologi serta bergantinya pemegang kekuasaan, definisi film independen Indonesia sangat mungkin telah bertransformasi sedemikian rupa. Kini, wajah sinema independen Indonesia tergambar dalam ragam festival film independen dan komunitas film independen yang hadir di Indonesia serta para sineas yang lahir dari keduanya. This paper describes the Indonesian independent film industry, ranging from how the it started until when it became part of the Indonesian film industry today. Employing historiography, this paper describes the development of independent cinema in Indonesia during the Post Reformation era. Since its emergence in the 1970s, not unline in other parts of the world, the influence of independent films on the national film industry was also apparent in Indonesia in the 20th century. During the New Order era, Indonesian independent cinema was driven by young filmmakers outside the mainstream film industry. However, the development of technology as well as the change of power holders enabled the definitive transformation of independent film in Indonesia. Today, the face of Indonesia independent cinema is illustrated by the variety of independent film festivals and independent film communities as well as filmmakers who emerged from both
