Of the three great principles of the French Revolution —liberty, equality, and fraternity— the concept of fraternity has been, philosophically speaking, the least studied and the most enigmatic. This article proposes a philosophical discussion of the concept of "fraternity" through the various conceptual metaphors that have been made through time. The author proposes that there are several conceptual metaphors that are completely different and even political and cognitive opposites, ranging from the modern republican political tradition to a legacy for contemporary socialism. The article concludes that the future of republican socialism lies in setting in resolutely and realistically setting in motion the pancivilizing program of fraternal revolutionary democracy
