This paper deals with the field current control method of a synchronous generator for ships using a compound type electronic automatic voltage regulator (AVR) in order to control output voltage of the generator. An original AVR scheme, which uses proportional–integral–differential control and pulse-width modulation scheme to control the output voltage of the compound system, is presented. The scheme of this AVR and the results from its tests, which show good static and dynamic capabilities, are adduced and described .
