This text is an analysis of the changes that have occurred in how television audiences are measured in the context of the digital transformation and the re-definition of what it means to be a “success”. First, we introduce the role played by the study of audiences in the broader framework of academic research on television, and then we will to continue with the main challenges facing the traditional systems with the arrival of the so-called “Social TV”. In the second part of the text, we will study the reception of El Ministerio del Tiempo (The Department of Time, TVE, 2015-), which is an example of television fiction whosesuccess is especially visible on social media and where the target of a specialized audience is a central element in its promotion and transmedia strategy.
