Using the particular lens of the art of memory, this article looks at the classic relationship between Proust’s novel and medieval architecture. Rediscovered by Frances Yates in the second half of the 20th century, the art of memory is a form of mnemonic systems used in Antiquity and the Middle Ages. While Proust did not know of such systems per se, his drawing on medieval architecture as a mnemonic frame for his novel is a continuation of this long-standing polymorphous art form
