De l’orfèvre à l’écrivain : poétique du « texte-bijou » à la fin du XIXe siècle1

Écrits à une époque où les relations entre « arts » et « métiers » se font plus étroites, À rebours (1884) de Joris-Karl Huysmans et Monsieur de Phocas (1901) de Jean Lorrain thématisent et textualisent une littérature qui, ciselée par l’écrivain, devient orfèvrerie. Le joyau forme une matière narrative, la main manipule à la fois la page et la gemme, la langue est matériau. La métaphore du « texte-bijou » permet ainsi d’instaurer toute une poétique, mais elle inscrit également ces deux romans dans la société fin-de-siècle.Written at a time when boundaries separating “art” from “craft” were quite permeable, À rebours (1884) by Joris-Karl Huysmans and Monsieur de Phocas (1901) by Jean Lorrain both show the themes and textures of a literature that, under the author’s faceting skills, has become jewelry.
