Histoire et dépaysement dans l’oeuvre de Pierre Nepveu

Cet article propose de distinguer deux versants dans l’oeuvre critique de Pierre Nepveu, l’un qui correspond à la volonté de dépayser la littérature québécoise, de l’arracher au grand récit national en insistant sur la dimension proprement subjective qui caractérise de nombreuses oeuvres, l’autre qui vise à réinscrire la question du « nous », et donc de l’Histoire, mais dans l’après-coup d’une perte irrémédiable, comme si le dépaysement était le « lieu commun » de l’individu postmoderne. Selon cette perspective, l’aventure de la subjectivité, loin de s’opposer à la participation de l’individu à l’Histoire, en constitue la base même, mais au nom d’une lucidité qui interdit l’adhésion spontanée et les enthousiasmes faciles. C’est une telle conscience historique que donnent à lire les essais, mais aussi les poèmes et les romans de Pierre Nepveu.History and Desorientation in the Work of Pierre NepveuThis article suggests that there are two aspects to the critical work of Pierre Nepveu, one related to the goal of disorienting Quebec literature, tearing it away from the great national narrative by insisting on a specifically subjective dimension that is characteristic of many works, and the other expressing an intention to take up the concept of “we” again, and hence of History, but in the aftermath of an irreparable loss, as if disorientation were the common lot of postmodern individuals. From this point of view, the adventure of subjectivity, far from constituting an obstacle to the individual’s participation in history, is in fact its very basis, but on behalf of a lucidity that forbids spontaneous conviction and any kind of facile enthusiasm.
