Sus edictos y las inscripciones grabadas en rocas o pilares ubicados en varias partes de su reino nos familiarizan no solamente con la personalidad de uno de los gobernantes más importantes de la historia de la India, sino también con los acontecimientos de su reinado. Acaso el más conocido de ellos sea su conversión al budismo. Promovió la labor misionera budista, que rebasó las fronteras extendiéndose por otros países, sobre todo por el sudeste asiático.
Ashoka (268-239 a. C.) was the third King of the Maurya dinasty. His edicts and the inscriptions engraved on the rocks or pilars placed in several parts of his reign show as not only the personality of one of the most important goberning in the Indian History, but also the events of his Kingdom.
