Ecosystem based approach rather than species based approach to management and conservation of marine recourses has been recognized as the sustainable way to tackle ecological complexities that apply to maintaining biodiversity. In this light Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) has gained prominence worldwide as a laudable tool for ecosystem based marine conservation and fishery management. This paper examines MPAs and suggests guidance for establishing them in Nigeria, whilst highlighting its benefits to ecosystem-based approach to coastal and marine resource such as fisheries management in Nigeria. Key words: Marine protected areas, fisheries conservation, ecosystem based management.
