Cytotoxic oligostilbenes from Shorea hopeifolia

Phytochemical and cytotoxicity investigations on the compounds from stem bark of Shorea hopeifolia were conducted. Four oligostilbenes of (-)-e-viniferin (1), (-)-ampelopsin E (2), (-)-hopeaphenol (3) and shoreaphenol (4) together with a coumarin of scopoletin (5) have been isolated and identified from the acetone extract of S. hopeifolia. The chemical structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic methods including UV, IR, NMR and MS, and also by comparison with the literature data. Cytotoxic properties of the isolated compounds were evaluated against human hepatoma (HepG2) and Chang’s liver cells. The results indicated that compound 3 was most cytotoxic towards HepG2 cells with CC50 value of 4.5 mg/ml. Key words: Dipterocarpaceae, Shorea hopeifolia, oligostilbenes, cytotoxicity.
