An instructional systems design (ISD) process guided the creation of MAJIK/K1, a hypercard program delivering basic, individualized library instruction in preparation for classroom teaching in more avanced topics. A technique derived from naturalistic inquiry (NI) was incorporated into the program's formative evaluation, which was administered to twenty-eight upperclassmen at the University of Maryland, College Park. Analysis of the data revealed that students had little difficulty with the content of the program but extensive difficulty in navigating within the HyperCard environment
