Art since 1940: strategies of being

This survey looks at art from 1940 to the present as an accumulation of unique contributions by individual artists. These are examined in depth together with chapters which concern the broader context of the past six decades. The book attempts a balanced perspective on art in Europe and America by the inclusion of black, Hispanic and women artists, and presents arguments to explain the reasons why great artists from these groups have previously been marginalized. Artists examined in detail include Calder, Hofmann, Gorky, Motherwell, de Kooning, Pollock, Newman, Rothko, David Smith, Dubuffet, Giacometti, Bacon, Rauschenberg et al. The book is illustrated with numerous coloured and black and white illustrations, and is provided with a concise bibliography. Jonathan Fineberg is Professor of Art History at the University of Illinois, and has taught at Harvard, Yale and Columbia universities. He won the Pulitzer Fellowship in Critical Writing in 1969, and his recent books include "The Innocent Eye: Children's Art and the Modern Artist"
