The distributed environments vary largely in\udtheir architectures, from tightly coupled cluster\udenvironment to loosely coupled Grid environment and\udcompletely uncoupled peer-to-peer environment, and thus\uddiffer in their working environments as well as\udperformance. To meet the specific needs of these\udenvironments for data organization, replication, transfer,\udscheduling etc. the data management systems implement\uddifferent data management models. In this paper, major\uddata management tasks in distributed environments are\udidentified and a taxonomy of the data management\udmodels in these environments is presented. The taxonomy\udis used to highlight the specific data management\udrequirements of each environment and highlight the\udstrengths and weakness of the implemented data\udmanagement models. The taxonomy is followed by a\udsurvey of different distributed and Grid environments and\udthe data management models they implement. The\udtaxonomy and the survey results are used to identify the\udissues and challenges of data management for future\udexploration
