In this work, we report on the electroplating of ultrafineand uniform magnesium (Mg) films on copper (Cu) andcarbon nanotube (CNT) paper substrates. By controllingthe process parameters and utilizing the pulsed depositionmethod, the average grain size of Mg was reduced to nanodimensions.Surface pretreatment of the substrates bydepositing a seed layer was found to be an efficient strategyfor reducing the energy barrier for nucleation, thusimproving nucleation density and the uniformity ofdeposited coatings. This work provides important guidancefor the fabrication of smooth nanostructured Mg filmson different substrates for a wide variety of applications
