The fifth generation of cellular networks (5G) offers infrastructure coverage for large areas, as well as providing high data rates, scalability and low latency. Device-to-device (D2D) communications will play a key role in 5G networks as they enable direct communication between devices with low involvement of base stations. These networks can be used in Vehicle Adhoc Networks (VANET), where vehicles are equipped with vehicle communication systems that run from entertainment applications to traffic safety. VANETs key applications include accident detection and prevention, which is often based on the transmission of broadcast alert messages to other vehicles and infrastructure devices. Each receiving node also replicates the alert message to inform other drivers in the region of the situation. The challenge in these networks is to reduce uncontrolled message replication, or broadcast storm, that is generated from accident alert message replication. This paper proposes a protocol for the dissemination of alert messages with replication control called Rules to Prevent Over-Dissemination Of MessaGEs (RODOGE). The rules and functions applied by RODOGE limit message spread across mobile and infrastructure devices, avoiding the broadcast storm problem. RODOGE has been tested and compared with other message dissemination protocols through extensive simulations using OMNeT++, SUMO and Veins with urban and road traffic. The results show that RODOGE reduces the amount of messages generated and received, avoiding the broadcast storm and maintaining a sufficient message coverage area to allow drivers to react to an event.
