International initiatives highlight the importance of teaching programming in elementary edu- cation, not only for training new professionals in the technology area, but in other areas too, such as engineering and mathematics. However, there are still many challenges to implement- ing this idea. In this perspective, this article presents a systematic review of the literature relat- ed to approaches to learning and teaching programming, and that was published over the last five years (2009-2013) in four major national events in the area (the Brazilian Symposium on Informatics in Education, the Workshop on Computers in School, Workshop on Computer Edu- cation and the Brazilian Symposium on Games and Digital Entertainment) and in two major national journals in the area (the Brazilian Journal of Computing in Education Magazine and the New Technologies in Education Journal). The observed results show that researchers prefer to develop tools for teaching algorithms and their research focus mainly on teaching program- ming to college education in a classroom teaching context, mostly carried out by researchers located in the Northeast, South and Southeast of Brazil. The results also show that publications in this research area have increased in 2013.
