This paper describes the building process of an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) system designed for children with autism who are not able to communicate orally. In an attempt to have a user centered design, a case study involving two separate processes on the assessment tool was developed. Initial evaluations were conducted with a child with autism, with whom communication strategies were developed with the support of the CAA system. In this context, the potential of the tool has been evaluated based on participant observations in which researchers monitored the use of the system by the child. The second evaluation process was developed by group of educators who verified the usability of the system, analyzing its interface. The evaluations led to an improvement of the system, based on the needs presented by their future users.
