This article explores the violent clown as an artist and border crosser at the intersection of science and art. Its aim is to introduce to a broader audience a forthcoming special issue of the scholarly journal Comedy Studies, in which clown violence and humour are explored from an array of academic and artistic perspectives. Artistic approaches to the violent clown phenomenon are broached in interviews with an Australian author, a professional clown and clown trainer, and a special effects artist and film director.
